Who is Mark Hulbert?
Mark Hulbert is the stock market commentator and founder of the Hulbert Financial Digest and Hulbert Interactive, and is one of the regular columnists on MarketWatch.com among other online publications.
Both the Hulbert Financial Digest and Hulbert Interactive specialize in tracking the recommendations of many of the most popular and read investment newsletters.
Mark Hulbert also created the famous Hulbert Stock Newsletter Sentiment Index (HSNSI) to help predict the short term outlook for the stock market. His index tracks the recommended percentage on capital that is allocated to the stock market among a group of short term market timing newsletters.
What is the Hulbert Stock Newsletter Sentiment Index?
The Hulbert Stock Newsletter Sentiment Index is a contrarian stock market indicator created by Mark Hulbert.
As a contrarian indicator, the HSNSI is bearish (believes it will go down) on the stock market when the funds allocated to the market by the short term market timers is high (market timers believe market will go up).
On the other end, the HSNSI is bullish when the percentage of funds allocated by the market timers is low. In other words, according to Mark Hulbert´s index, you are suppose to do the opposite of what the short term market timing newsletters are recommending, thus the expression "contrarian" indicator.
Some statistical studies have indicated that the HSNSI had little or no predictive value in determining stock market return over the short and intermediate term. Mark Hulbert however has argued that "back testing" the index as far back as 1985 has shown that the Hulbert Stock Newsletter Sentiment Index is a valid indicator of future stock market trends.
What is the Hulbert Financial Digest?
The Hulbert Financial Digest is not a market advisor or market newsletter in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, the Hulbert Financial Digest tracks the performance of a group of mutual fund and stock market investment newsletters.
Mark Hulbert started the Hulbert Financial Digest to track the record of investment newsletter predictions when in 1979 he discovered that the claims made by most of these newsletters were highly exaggerated.
Currently the Hulbert Financial Digest tracks over 500 portfolios from over 180 different stock and mutual fund newsletters. The Hulbert Financial Digest has kept records since 1980 and aims to help you choose among the top performing newsletters out there.
