Jet Ski Insurance
78Why buy jet ski insurance?
If you never had the chance to try jet skiing I highly recommend it. Its fun, fast, and adrenaline packed. Jet skiing is also becoming increasingly popular and is can be considered a high risk sport with expensive equipment.
If you consider the risk to yourself or the people who use your jet ski, the cost of the equipment, and the fact that we are a very litigious society, you should have jet ski insurance if you practice the sport.
Unlike car insurance, there is not legal requirement at the moment to carry jet ski insurance, but do to the above mentioned, it is strongly recommended that you have jet ski insurance if you own a jet ski. Due to the "dangerous" nature of the sport, these activities are not covered by any other type of insurance, personal, travel or liability.
Jet ski insurance options
There are two basic options for buying jet ski insurance. You can opt to go with an insurer that specializes in water sports, boat and jet ski insurance. In this case it will most likely be a smaller, niche insurer, that you never heard of, and can draw up a policy very specific to your needs. Some of these insurers have online sites and will give you immediate coverage.
The other option is buying more generic coverage from a larger insurer. In this case you get to work with a know brand, but your coverage could lack some of the specifics of going with a smaller insurer.
Types of coverages for jet ski insurance
Jet ski insurance is very comprehensive and most of the risks you are exposed to will be covered by the average policy.
There are several types of coverage you should consider if you plan on owning buying jet ski insurance:
- comprehensive coverage - This coverage is for damages done to your jet ski. This covers you against damages, vandalism, fire and theft. It also covers third party liability. Make sure that you are covered in the event an uninsured vessel damages your jet ski since this is one of the most common occurrences.
- Third party coverage - This type on jet ski insurance covers damages to other people´s property. This type of coverage also insures against injury you may cause to other people.

Jet ski insurance coverage varies widely from company to company. Aside from the basic coverage needs I mentioned, there are a few questions you should ask before choosing a policy:
- Does the theft coverage cover the jet ski no matter where it is being stored?
- Is there a minimum age for the insured driver?
- Are you covered abroad?
- Are you covered if you are driving some elses vessel?
- Are you covered for damages to your jet ski while it is not in the water? During transport for example.
- Are passengers on the jet ski covered? Or just the driver?
These are just some the things you want to look out for when comparing the various types of jet ski insurances. Remember to shop around and get quotes from several different insurers before making a final decision. Normally the cost of an annual policy starts at about $500 and can go as high as $1000 for more comprehensive coverage.
